These days, people think of Florida as a great place to retire. And it really is! The fact that it has so many amazing towns with amazing histories can really help solidify that image. One such town is Punta Gorda, just one of the historic and beautiful cities in the state of Florida.

The Beginning

“Fat Point” (no wonder they went with the Spanish “Punta Gorda”!) was named after the point of land that settlers arrived in the region in the late 1800’s. It was a good piece of land with its position between the Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico. This process began when two Union Army veterans homesteaded a space south of the Peace River a full decade after the Civil War.

In 1876, a couple named James and Josephine Lockhart built a home on a plot of land, which the city ended up building around. Two years later, the land was sold to a hunter and trapper and his wife, until 1883 when it was sold to Isaac Trabue who then paid for more land along the harbor. His intent from the start was to build a genuine town in South Florida, naming it Trabue after himself. In 1886, a railroad stop was added to the region, transforming Trabue into the southernmost point in the entire state of Florida, additionally transforming the region into a tourist-friendly region. A year later, the town was renamed Punta Gorda. In 1887, phosphate was discovered in the Peace River and this swiftly became the region’s chief industry. Two years later, in 1890, a postmaster was appointed.

Modern History

In the early twentieth century, the town grew steadily and Charlotte County was formed in 1921 after political maneuvering split Desoto County in two. During World War Two, an Army airfield was built in the region to help train combat pilots for battles in both the European and Pacific theaters. Once the war concluded with an Allied victory over fascism, the airfield was turned over to Charlotte County that was eventually transformed into Punta Gorda Airport. The rise of suburbans made an impact on Punta Gorda and in 1959, a neighborhood of canal-front houses known as Punta Gorda Isles was established. Including 55 miles of canals 100 feet wide and 17 feet deep, these homes were only the beginning. In the 1980s, the former Maud Street Fishing Docks were transformed into a commercial complex that still draws in business to the region. In 2004, Hurricane Charley damaged a large number of buildings but opened the way to revitalization projects for the whole region.

As you can see, Punta Gorda Florida has a rich history. From the early days of the United States, this area has seen its fair share of important events. And as the years have passed and Punta Gorda has progressed into the future, many changes have been made.

But one thing hasn’t changed; Punta Gorda’s beautiful scenery and friendly citizens. It’s a great place to live and also to visit on your next vacation.
